Hi Barbara,
My book is coming out on June 15, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to feature something about it on your site?

http://weightofsilence.wordpress.com

I would really love it if you could make an announcement about the book publication, or maybe do a review or a Q&A or something? I'm setting up a Virtual Book Tour for June 15-30 that maybe you could be a part of....

Let me know! Thanks and namaste,
Shelley

Several arranged mariages these days are quite miserable in India. This is because the social fabric in India is undergoing massive changes due to influences of factors such as changes in the family, changes in role of caste in professions, urbanization, , acceptance of western values such as gender equality, education for all, democratic values, etc.
Indian women and men now have greater dreams and expectations from marriage, their spouses and do not have low expectations or passive acceptance of 'their fate' such as the older generatons did. These higher expectations from marriage coupled with the continued tradition of arranged marriages has lead to frustration in marriages.
I know for a fact that the number of urban college students clandestinely dating today is higher than the numbers clandestinely dating even a few years ago ! This has lead to youth trying to resist arranged marriages or putting conditions on their parents about their expectations from the spouse being chosen by their parents.

Hmm, arranged marriages though, tend to run the gamut as far as choice is concerned. Some are forced. Some are only arranged after the two parties have dated extensively and only then, brought the family into the picture. Others fall along the spectrum.

I think that the ideal of virginal purity is slowly disappearing when faced with changing times. Yes, the majority of families would strongly prefer someone who hasn't had sex, and in some cases, hasn't had another relationship at all. Yet with people (especially in the West) trying to fuse Western dating with Eastern marriage traditions, these things are being relaxed.

This is just based on my personal experience. I'm having an arranged marriage myself in the future.
